It's been a busy Summer so far here at Mill End, and it's been an absolute pleasure to welcome back many frequent guests, and to see so many people sampling the pleasures of Mill End for the first time.
We've been busy working on plans for a few events over the coming months. A fabulous Christmas House Party, a Country House New Year, a very special Taste Weekend focusing on fine seasonal game, and a fascinating Foraging Weekend which will include a visit to the seaside for a bit of shoreline foraging!

Chagford Show

Great to see so many people at last week's Chagford Show (even though the weather could have been a little better!). As always, the show was packed with things to do and see, and prize-winning animals of every description. Chef Wayne put on an excellent show on our stand, with tasters of his divine tomato consomme going down a treat!

Devon County Show 2011

One of the highlights of Devon's event calendar, the 116th annual Devon County Show comes to the Westpoint showground near Exeter on the 19th, 20th and 21st May 2011.

The show is expected to attract more than 90,000 visitors to the 93 acre site. 7,000 animals, a wealth of Devon food and drink, a flower marquee, hundreds of trade standards and virtually non-stop entertainment in six show rings.

Watch animals at work, rest and play. See Devon craftsmen at their work. Visit the traditional fairground, try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, or just stroll around the massive rural site soaking up the atmosphere of the show.

As our regular guests (and visitors to our Blog) know, we've been busy refreshing our bedrooms recently. Nothing too dramatic, but a lick of fresh paint here, some new fittings there, and a few other changes to surprise and delight our guests without changing the much-loved and character-full environment which is so much a part of the Mill End Hotel.
We've finally got round to having some great new photos taken of our bedrooms, and have incorporated some of these into our website to help our guests choose the very best room for them.
We've also taken the opportunity to rename our rooms after each of the rivers here on Dartmoor and the surrounding areas of Devon.

The annual Festival of Food, Drink and Arts, held a couple of weeks ago in our neighbouring lovely Dartmoor town of Moretonhampstead, was a great success and certainly drew in the crowds.
A few of our guests that weekend took the opportunity to visit the festival, and everyone seemed to enjoy our head chef Wayne's delicious onion soup tasters on offer to festival-goers!
Wayne, and our hotel manager Tristan, were delighted to help celebrity chef Michael Caines cut the ribbon to open festival proceedings.

Festival of Food, Drink and Arts

This weekend (Saturday 5th March), our neighbouring Dartmoor town of Moretonhampstead is once again home to the popular annual Moretonhampstead Festival of Food, Drink and Arts.

The event runs from early morning through to late afternoon, with live music throughout the day and into the evening.

Naturally local food and expert cooking take centre stage, including demonstrations from celebrity chef Michael Caines and a feature appearance from our very own Head Chef here at Mill End, Wayne Pearson. Wayne will be cooking up a piping hot, delicious Onion Soup, and of course tasters will be available!

Relaunch Party at Mill End

We had the great pleasure of welcoming over a hundred guests - friends, neighbours, local business-people and our valued local suppliers - to an evening of drinks, canapes and fireside chat to celebrate the relaunch of Mill End Hotel last week.

A very pleasant evening all round, and a good opportunity for us to show off the results of the refurbishment work that's been keeping us busy over the last couple of months.

It was a delight to hear so many positive things about Mill End's reputation locally, and to receive some very nice and genuine feedback about the improvements we've made of late.

Word is certainly spreading regarding our new Sunday Lunch menu, which is proving a big hit with locals and visitors alike. And the improvements we've made to our bedrooms seem to have been very well received.

Sunday lunch at Mill End

We've launched our new Sunday lunch menu here at Mill End. Our thinking behind the new menu was to capture everything that's best about a traditional British Sunday Lunch, whilst bringing extra touches of indulgence to make Sunday lunch at Mill End a bit special.
Today our starters included a warming home-made tomato and chive soup, and Mill End Prawn Cocktail - our twist on an old classic. Our Sunday lunch menu of course always includes a choice of locally farmed meats, plus a fish and vegetarian option. And proper puddings to round off a simply classic Sunday lunch.
After lunch, our guests today enjoyed coffee in front of our crackling open fire in the lounge, and a few hardier types headed off for a bracing stroll along the river towards nearby Chagford.

Mill End Re-Opens

After a very brief break following the busy Christmas and New Year period, Mill End re-opened last weekend and our first guests of the 2011 season settled in. Although the hotel had been closed for a couple of weeks, the whole team here was busy with our early Spring-clean, and the odd coat of paint to generally freshen things up for the year ahead.
We've been delighted to see a few Mill End regulars already coming back for a well-deserved winter break, and we've also had the pleasure of welcoming some new guests to the hotel, with many of our guests choosing the hotel as a base for some beautiful walks on Dartmoor, our "back garden".
Our chef and his team have been working on a fresh new Sunday Lunch menu, which we think will be a hit with hotel guests and locals alike. We'll add some details here shortly.
We've had some lovely weather over the last week - cold, but clear, crisp and breathtaking. The photo we've posted here was taken on a chilly but refreshing walk around nearby Fernworthy Reservoir.
Particularly when it's bracing outside, our crackling open fires here at Mill End (particularly with a G&T in hand) are a very welcome end to a day on Dartmoor.

Our new website

After weeks of work behind the scenes, and in readiness for the busy year ahead, we are delighted to have launched Mill End's new website today. The new website includes some lovely new photography, a wealth of information on the hotel and our surroundings, a selection of "Mill End Experiences" to enhance our guests' stay with us, and a selection of our latest sample menus from The Restaurant at Mill End. We've also included a few snippets from Mill End's history, including a delightful copy of a page from the 1962 "Signpost" hotel guide, which make fascinating reading!
The new website is sure to contain a few "wrinkles", which we will iron out in time. If you have any comments on the new site, or suggestions on things you'll like to include, please do get in touch.

A little early Spring Cleaning

No sooner than we'd said goodbye to our welcome guests who stayed over the Christmas and New Year period, we embarked on a few jobs around the hotel during our short closed period. We are always sympathetic to the hotel's heritage, so our aim is to keep what is good, but refresh things with a gentle touch here and there. A few of our bedrooms have had a fresh coat of paint, and some new and stylish wallpaper in-keeping with the hotel's country style. In the public areas some of the curtains and lampshades came down briefly while we applied a nice new coat of paint and generally spruced things up a little in readiness for the Spring. Whilst it is still a little cold and (sometimes) rainy, it really won't be long before vases of fresh local Daffodils bring a touch of Spring to the hotel.

Snow at Mill End

As we turn our thoughts to our first Christmas with our guests here at Mill End, we have experienced a taste of the beauty that a little (actually quite a lot!) of snow can bring. Fortunately for the most part the roads have remained open, and our arriving guests are very glad of the warmth provided by the log fires in our lounges (and by the warmth of the welcome from the whole team here, regardless of the rather frosty conditions outside!).

The beauty of Dartmoor, either from the comfort of the car, or for our more adventurous guests, on foot, is certainly amplified by the snowy conditions. And the pleasure of returning to the warmth here at Mill End is a definite bonus for everyone!
